This new Samuel Shen SB 300 Mirecourt (2022-10-112) is an excellent example of this larger form pear-shaped orchestral model. The 300 quality level uses very fine examples of spruce and maple. Only the rare 800 series uses the highest quality woods. The fine grain spruce top has good winter grain structure and has tonally complex tap tones. The figured maple ribs and carved back also exhibits strong, complex tap tones. The mid-grade brass single unit tuning machines turn freely and precisely the nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece saddle are all made of ebony. The replacement African ebony Hill style tailpiece is also made of ebony. The replacement Despiau three trees bridge has been fit with adjusters. The endpin is the adjustable 10 mm rod type. The reddish-brown oil varnish finish is especially beautiful. The Pirastro Permanent strings are a fine choice for this orchestral instrument. Dimensions are: Top length 43 1/8″, Upper bout width 20″, Middle bout width 15″, Lower bout width 28″, Rib depth at tail 8 3/4″, Rib depth at upper bout corner 7 1/2″, Rib depth at neck joint 6 1/4″, String length 41 1/2″.
