Description
This new “Swan Workshop” custom 3/4 carved back is shipped from Germany unfinished, with the neck separate from the body. First, the fingerboard is replaced with a full thickness aged African ebony board. Next the neck is set into the body at a productive angle. Lastly, the assembled bass receives a new custom oil varnish finish that takes 3-4 months to apply. These basses have a responsive nature and a darkly complex voice. The spruce top of this example has a moderate grain width, which helps the low end for jazz pizz playing. The undiluted ribs are made from clear figure maple the has been seasoned for many years. The plain figure maple back plate has a moderately carved arching. The maple neck is fit with gold Rubner tuning machines, positioned so that the G machine is closest to the nut, allowing the thinnest, most flexible string to take the sharpest ned over the nut. The fittings are all aged African ebony. The Teller 2 star bridge has been fit with adjusters. The endpin is a solid graphite example from New Harmony. The current stringing is Spirocore orchestra gauge for a full and forceful jazz voice. The dimensions are: Top length 42 1/8″, Upper bout width 19 3/8″, Middle bout width 14″, Lower bout width 25 3/4″, Length of back, including button 43 1/2″, Rib depth at tail 8 3/8″, Rib depth at upper bout corner 8 1/4″, Rib depth at neck joint 6 3/4″, String length 41 1/4″.
