Description
This new Shen SB 800 maple 5/8 carved back (2022-6-117) is one of only 3 model 800 series Shen instruments that I have ever had in the shop. Only the 1000 series uses higher designation materials and workmanship. The narrow grain spruce top has a large and colorful orchestral voice. The maple ribs and back plate feature prominent flame figure and richly colorful tap tones. The maple neck has been fit with brass and stainless steel individual tuning machines. The nut, fingerboard, replacement Hill style tailpiece, and tailpiece saddle are made from ebony. The adjustable endpin is the 10 mm steel rod type with ebony collar. The high quality replacement maple bridge is a Teller that has been fit with adjusters. The golden amber oil varnish finish shows the very high quality maple and spruce that lies beneath. The strings are Thomastik Bel Canto for a colorful orchestral voice. The dimensions are: Top length 41 1/4″, Upper bout width 19 3/4″, Middle bout width 13 1/2″, Lower bout width 25″, Rib depth at tail 8 1/8″, Rib depth at upper bout corner 7 1/8″, Rib depth at neck joint 6 1/4″, String length 39 5/8″. The bass is a very fine orchestral bass for the serious student or community orchestra. With cover.
