This new Shen SB 200 willow 3/4 flatback (2021-2-72) is a versatile example, but makes an exceptionally effective jazz instrument. The Spruce top features very even top grain width and a rich voice that is especially resonant in the lower midrange and bass. The willow back and sides are of medium density and have darker tap tones than the 2019 example. The maple neck has been fit with individual mid-range brass tuning machines. The nut and fingerboard are ebony. The replacement tailpiece and tailpiece saddle are of ebony. The Despiau bridge has been fit with aluminum adjusters. The replacement endpin is a solid graphite model from New Harmony. The red-brown oil varnish finish is especially beautiful the morning sunlight. The strings are Thomastik Spirocore orchestra gauge. Dimensions are: Top length 41 3/4″, Upper bout width 20″, Middle bout width 14 1/4″, Lower bout width 25 1/2″, Rib depth at tail 8 1/4″, Rib depth at upper bout crease 7 7/8″, Rib depth at neck 6″, String length 41 7/8″. Though a fine choice for section arco work, this bass is especially useful for the serious student or gigging professional for playing jazz. With cover.
