This new Shen SB 150 hybrid 5/8 (2020-8-127) is a very nice example of this popular student model. The solid spruce top features bold grain lines and medium-fine grain width at the center, spreading to wider grain at the upper and lower bout edges. The back and sides are laminated maple. The maple neck is fit with single unit brass tuning machines. The nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece saddle are ebony. The tailpiece is ebonized white wood. 10 mm adjustable endpin. The replacement Despiau bridge has been fit with aluminum adjusters. The strings are D’Addario Zyex. The red-brown oil varnish finish has a quiet look to it. Dimensions are: Top length 41 1/4″, Upper bout width 19 5/8″, Middle bout width 14 1/4″, Lower bout width 25 1/2″, Rib depth at tail 8″, Rib depth at upper bout crease 7 1/2″, Rib depth at neck 6 1/8″, String length 39 3/4″. This bass tonally complete and projects well. It is an easy playing instrument in both jazz and orchestral settings.
