This new Shen SB 190 Rogeri (large 3/4 size) hybrid model (2019-9-76) may well be the last example of this model that has been so popolar over the years. These basses generally have a very large voice, even though the string length is the same as the standard 3/4 size Shen models.
Top length 43 1/2″, Upper bout width 20 3/4″, Middle bout width 14 1/2″, Lower bout width 26 1/2″, Rib depth at tail 8 1/2″, Rib depth at upper bout crease 7 7/8″, Rib depth at neck 6 5/8″, String length 41 3/4″, Bridge height 6 5/8″.
The stiff spruce top has medium grain width and bold grain lines. The Sides are solid will, the back a flat maple laminate with conventional ladder type bracing. The maple neck is fitted with single unit mid-grade brass tuning machines. The nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece are ebony. The replacement French style tailpiece is rosewood. The replacement Aubert bridge is a nice cut and density and is fitted with aluminum adjusters. The endpin is an adjustable 10 mm steel rod. The finish is a nice red-brown oil varnish that is lightly applied. As with all Shen hybrid models in the shop, we have string it with D’Addario Zyex strings. this bass has a large versatile voice, useful in both orchestral or pizz situations. We are very sad to see this model go if it is indeed the last one that will be available.
