This 2015 Shen SB 180 deluxe hybrid (2015-6-58) was purchased for a dedicated high school freshman and used in the school orchestra for four years. He took very good care of it and the bass shows little sign of having been played as consistently as it was. The spruce top is of moderate grain width and flexibility, providing a developed voice for Arco play. The laminated maple back and sides show little sign of play wear. The maple neck has a slight amount of flame figure along its length. The mid-grade brass tuning machines were well maintained and they turn easily and precisely. The nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece saddle are ebony, the tailpiece itself being ebonized hardwood. The German maple replacement bridge has had adjusters installed and they turn freely and smoothly. The 10 mm steel rod endpin has a replacement German-made rubber tip. The amber-orange oil varnish finish is lovely and shows the attractive grain figure features. The strings are a new set of D’Addario Zyex medium gauge for versatility in orchestral and jazz play.
Top length 42 3/4″, Upper bout width 20″, Middle bout width 14 1/2″, Lower bout width 26 14″, Rib depth at tail 8 1/8″, Rib depth at upper bout crease 7 3/4″, Rib depth at neck joint 6 1/8″, String length 41 1/2″.
This bass has developed a vey nice voice with a lot of character. A fine student instrument. With cover.
