Description

This 2012 New Standard Cleveland ply 5 string (sn 395) was a special order that was never picked up. New Standard has modernized the wonderful vintage “American Standard” basses originally made by the H.N. White band instruments maker and made these improvements: Better ply materials with a European poplar core, Maple neck with a conventional mortise joint rather than a dovetail joint, a 42″ string length top replace the long original string length of 43 1/2″ (!!!), Solid Maple sides, and custom Rubner tuners with the G string tuner located closest to the the nut. The varnish is a dark brown oil. The Ebony fittings are aged African ebony stock. This bass was displayed originally with a low B string, but have recently gone to a Spirocore orchestra set with a high C string. This tuning has long been a favorite with dance band players, but has been steadily gaining popularity in the classical world (sometimes paired with a C extension). The bass has a large, even, and warm voice that has a penetrating quality for playing in a larger group setting. A wonderful performance instrument.
