Description
This 33 year old Wilfer 3/4 carved back has been cared for to a remarkable degree. It has also had performance upgrades of a top regraduation and bass bar remodeling. The fingerboard has been replaced with an aged African ebony fingerboard. The very clean surface quality and mild to medium figure in the maple are very attractive. The top has medium grain at the center, transitioning into very evenly spaced fine grain at the edges. The maple back, sides, and neck are free from any defects and have a mild to medium flame figure. The chrome halfplate Rubner tuners have not been used much and turn very freely. The ebony nut, fingerboard, tailpiece and tailpiece saddle are of consistently high quality. The upgraded endpin is a new one from Gotz that features brass fittings on an ebony collar and a standard 10 mm steel rod. The new french bridge with fitted adjusters are a nice upgrade from the original slightly warped bridge. The dark brown varnish is in great shape, with only a very few small bumps here and there and virtually no playing use wear. The current strings are Pirastro Permanent for use in orchestral settings.
DIMENSIONS are:
Top length 42 5/8″, Upper bout width 19 1/2″, Middle bout width 14″, Lower bout width 25 5/8″, Depth at tail 8 3/8″, Depth at upper bout corner 8 3/8″, Depth at neck 6 7/8″, String length 41″.
This bass plays very easily and responds well to orchestral playing. Without a cover. I would suggest a a Presto or similar cover and we have several options available.
