This new Shen SB 180 3/4 deluxe hybrid model (2022-6-44) is a rich-voiced example with a strong low end. The solid spruce top is another fine example, with narrow grain and colorful tap tones. The back and sides are figured laminate maple. The maple neck has had single unit mid-grade brass tuning machines installed. The nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece saddle are made from ebony. The tailpiece is ebonized white wood. The endpin is an adjustable 10 mm steel rod type. The upgraded bridge is German source maple with added adjusters. The red-brown oil varnish is quite beautiful. The strings are D’Addario Zyex. Dimensions are: Top length 43 1/4″, Upper but width 20″, Middle bout width 14 1/2″, Lower bout width 26 1/4″, Rib depth at tail 8 1/2″, Rib depth at upper bout corner 7 1/2″, Rib depth at neck 6 1/4″, String length 41 3/4″. The voice is large and rich in the midrange and bass. This bass would function quite well in an orchestra section or on the jazz bandstand.
