ca. 1870 French 7/8 flatback

This wonderful old French 7/8 flatback, circa 1870, is in fine shape and functions as a powerful and clearly penetrating section or solo instrument. Well maintained for the last few decades by its consigning owner, this instrument has been a mainstay in a couple of community orchestras. Like many french basses from this era, the back has no upper bout bend, but a gentle tapered depth toward the top of the body. Beautiful spruce top with fine grain at center and medium at the edges, Moderately flame figured maple back and sides, Unfigured maple neck, Single unit 19th century brass single unit tuners, Levered C extension, 10 mm steel rod endpin, Recent Aubert Luxe bridge without adjusters, Ebony side bumpers, Reddish-orange oil varnish finish. Dimensions are: Top length 44 1/4″, Upper bout width  21 1/4″,  Middle bout width  15 3/4″, Lower bout width 27 1/4″,  Depth at neck 6 5/8″, Depth at upper bout corner 7 3/4, Depth at tail 8 1/4″, String length 41 7/8″. Strung with evan Pirazzi strings, this fine bass will be the price of the bass section at a very affordable price.
