This 2010 Upton Professor 5 string bass was an experiment for a player who already was enjoying a large Xuechang 7/8 carved back Gofriller pattern instrument with an I stalled C extension. The player realized in a matter of a few months that a 5 string was not for him, which is why this bass presents in such clean condition. Though originally set up with a low B string, I have recently restrung it with a Spirocore Orchestral set that includes a high C string, a configuration that is becoming increasingly popular with orchestral players. This Upton Bass was made at a time when the company was still sourcing bodies and necks from the large factory in Reghin, Romania that supplied instruments for Kolstein, JR Music Supply, Thomas, etc. Upton supplied their own finish, fingerboard, Sloane tuners, and fittings. The dimensions are: Top length 44″, Upper bout width 20 3/4″, Middle bout width 15 5/8″, Lower bout width 27″, Depth at tail 8 7/8″, Depth at upper bout corner 8 1/8″, Depth at neck joint 7 3/8″, String length 42 1/8″. The voice is clear and penetrating, with a large presence in all ranges. With cover.
