This consignment 2005 Thomas Martin large 3/4 size violin cornered carved back (#108) is an especially fine example of the fine craftsmanship coming from their shop. The presentation is that of a strong and solid English orchestral instrument. The bass has seen a lot of playing in conservatory and performance settings, developing the voice of the instrument into a strong and musically complex presence, with an easy nimbleness for soloing work. Beautiful medium grain Spruce top, Mildly figured Maple back, sides, and neck, Rubner individual tuning machines, Ebony fittings all around, 12 mm steel rod endpin, German maple bridge with adjusters added, Small rosewood bumpers Dark orange-brown oil varnish. Dimensions are: Top length 42 3/4″, Upper bout width 20 3/8″, Middle bout width 15″, Lower bout width 26 5/8″, Depth at tail 9 1/4″, Depth at upper bout crease 9″, Depth at neck 6 1/2″, String length 40 5/8″. The voice is rich and mature with a nice tonal depth that is unusual for a medium sized instrument with a very easy playing string length. A beautiful orchestral or soloing doublebass. The bass could use a cleaning to remove rosin buildup and some finish detailing on the top edges in the lower bout from heavy use in conservatory training and professional use. Though photographed with Bel Canto strings, superior results have been achieved ¬†with Priastro Flexocore Deluxe strings. With Mooradian cover.
