This consignment 1950 blonde Kay S-51 “Chubby Jackson” 5 string model (24871) is a fairly clean example of this upper end specialty model for Kay, with some outer ply edge injuries on the back plate. Spruce laminate top with inlaid purfling on top edge and around F holes, Curly maple laminated sides, Maple laminated back with inlaid purfling around the edge. Maple neck of standard Kay width, Kluson 5 string tuning machines, Ebony nut, Wider ebony 5 string fingerboard overhangs the standard width neck, Maple bridge with no adjusters, Original Kay 5 string ebony tailpiece, Original wooden endpin, Blonde lacquer finish, Strung with low B D’Addario helicore hybrid 5 string set. DIMENSIONS are: Top length 43 1/2″, Upper bout width 20 3/8″, Middle bout width 15 1/4″, Lower bout width 26 1/2″, Depth at tail 7 7/8″, Depth at upper bout corner 7 1/2″, Depth at neck 6 5/8″, String length 42″. The bass plays surprisingly easy in the non-standard low B configuration. This bass was designed as a dance band instrument with a high C string for soloing in lower positions.
