This consignment 1939 Gretsch (5481), made by Kay, is in fine working order and it has an even voice. There are no neck breaks, rare for a Kay. This model is most like a Kay C-1 model, with the addition of painted “flame figure” to the back and sides. The neck heel shows a few checks in the maple. The Kluson tuners are in good working order. The endpin and bridge have been replaced and a flexible tail wire has been added. Dimensions are: Top length 43 1/2″, Upper bout width 20 3/8″, Middle bout width 15 1/4″, Lower bout width 26 1/2″, Depth at tail 8″, Depth at upper bout corner 7 5/8″, 6 3/4″, String length 41 1/2″. A good working bass for americana, bluegrass, or rockabilly styles. With cover.
